30 Days of Applique Play!

Looking to jumpstart your creativity? To dip your toes into applique? To get out of a quilting rut? Maybe to do all three? Join us (Cabrini & Amanda from @Broadclothstudio) as we start the new year off with #30DaysOfAppliquePlay to reset and recharge our creativity.

Applique is a wonderful quilting technique, but the open-ended nature of arranging your pieces can be...overwhelming! Where do you start? How do you decide on your layout? How do you even begin to think about thinking about it?

Join us as we play with applique designs this January! We’ll be supplying weekly prompts of design elements with ideas for how to iterate and play with your shapes, sharing our own design adventures along the way. And at the end of the month, we’ll be walking through how to turn a favorite design (or two!) into a finished project.

What you need to know:

WHO: Me, Cabrini, of Cabin Week Projects and Amanda @broadclothstudio will be hosting your month-long playdate!

WHAT: Five days a week, we’ll be “playing” with a pre-set, pre-cut, pre-prepped set of basic fabric shapes, creating a small collage using our set of shapes, taking a photo of our final arrangement, and sharing the photo on Instagram with the hashtag #30DaysOfAppliquePlay. At the end of the month, we’ll share our favorite “top nine” arrangements and sew up our favorite-favorite (or all nine) into an applique mini quilt wall!

WHEN: Starting January 2, 2022 we’ll email you every Sunday with encouragement, tips, and tricks and will capture our own Fabric Play on Instagram throughout the week! At the end of January, we’ll wrap the playdate up and share our best practices and ideas for how to take your favorite design(s) and turn it into a quilt

WHERE: Follow us on Instagram: @cabinweekprojects and @broadclothstudio as well as the hashtag #30DaysOfFabricPlay to join in the fun

WHY: Because we’d rather start the new year off with fun way to challenge our creativity and tap into our internal inspiration instead of setting resolutions!

More of a DIY-er? Amanda and I will be sharing their top tips and digital downloads starting December 19, but if you’d like to start pulling things together (or digging through your stash for fabrics), here’s what you’ll need for the month:

  • Background: 1 fat quarter (or if you’d prefer to work on a smaller canvas a 16” x 16” square will work as well)
  • Shapes Fabric: 6 fat eighths (9” x 21”) and 1 fat quarter (18” x 22”)
  • Interfacing: 1¼ yds of Pellon 805 Wonder-Under
  • Rotary Cutter (if you’re planning on cutting curves, you might want an 18mm in addition to the “usual” 45mm)
  • Scissors
  • Camera (the one on your phone will do the trick!)
  • Optional: shapes templates (we’ll have more about this in our Dec 19th email!)

Sounds like fun, right?!?? Don’t miss out, sign up now:
